So, as the cold weather sets in, you may start to notice that your lips are starting to feel more chapped and cracked. Naturally, you reach for that tube of chapstick stashed in your pocket or purse. But did you know that some chapsticks and lip balms can actually do more harm than good?

Many medicated balms, often used to treat cold sores and other conditions, contain ingredients like camphor, menthol, alcohol and salicylic acid. Initially, they offer a soothing and calming sensation, but they can become irritating when used frequently. For normal chapped lips, ditch the medicated lip balm and instead look for lip balms that contain ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, beeswax, lanolin or honey.
